A tea set is a matched collection that together completes a defined ritual — a brewing vessel, drinking vessels in a consistent count, and the accessories the ritual needs (strainers, sugar bowls, trays, scoops). What separates a set from a piecemeal collection is aesthetic continuity (single pattern, glaze, or material family) plus functional completeness. A 21-piece British afternoon-tea service, a 6-piece Chinese gongfu kit, and a 5-cup Japanese sencha set are all 'complete' — but each is complete on its own tradition's terms.
